CAN views

January 2025 - a selection of prints to be displayed at The Foyer Gallery, Creative Arts Napier, New Zealand. Each original photomontage contains pixels from freely usable sources on the Internet including Morguefile and Rijksmuseum.

"As a member of The Print Council Aotearoa NZ two of my pictures were at Creative Arts Napier (CAN) in 2023. Now a solo exhibition will be in the Foyer Gallery during January 2025.

The new generative AI processes (GenAI), that use algorithms to analyse millions of images by inputting text, is a way to create art that looks like real photographs. However, my preferred approach is to visually work through several hundred freely usable artworks provided copyright free by individuals and institutions - click on links below to view image source.
Pixel layers are created, by applying digital composite techniques by hand to the selected works, and layers evolve until one remains. The CAN compositions are actual photomontages from a series called 'Views' and show elements of -scapes that reflect imaginary/real places.

These pieces are one-offs providing an opportunity to have a unique 'View'. The collection includes 16 original archival pigment prints on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm paper. There are 3 sizes, up to 45 x 36cm. All are signed, unframed and unmounted.

Any sales will be divided between: 'Trees That Count' - planting native tree in Aotearoa NZ (40%), CAN gallery commission (30%) and exhibition costs (30%)."
